Acid reflux in infants is unthinkable for many adults but it does occur. You may wonder if your baby has the disorder and you also may wonder how to treat the condition as well. Following is some information to help you identify the symptoms and some approaches you can take to treat acid reflux in infants.

The symptoms include vomiting. This is different from the common spit-up that parents face on a daily basis. Acid reflux in infants includes excessive vomiting that reoccurs through the day and through the night as well. If your baby throws up significantly throughout the course of the day you want to seek medical attention.

Acid reflux in infants is an extremely common condition. It happens when contents from the stomach back up into the esophagus

Vomiting is one of the most obvious signs in acid reflux in babies. Other symptoms are subtle and may be difficult to recognize. For example, if the baby has a cough that just won’t seem to go away and he has difficulty breathing he may have acid reflux disease. Symptoms like heartburn and abdominal pain are difficult to detect simply because the baby can’t tell you what specifically is wrong. A sign of acid reflux in infants includes gas and stomach discomfort. This will usually manifest itself with fussiness and crying, especially during and right after feedings. The baby may also have difficulty eating. He may choke and cough while you are trying to feed him. These more subtle symptoms resemble colic and it is important to note that the two conditions may be related in some cases. Colic and acid reflux in infants often go hand in hand.

So how is acid reflux in infants treated? The good news is that the baby will probably outgrow the condition but it is crucial that you consult his pediatrician if you believe that he has acid reflux. While you are waiting for your appointment here are some things that you can try to reduce the symptoms in the meantime.

Elevate the baby’s head. Of course, you don’t want to pile pillows under his little head. There are raisers that can be put under the mattress in the crib or right in the bassinette. These items are easily installed and they are relatively inexpensive as well. Since the problem with the condition is that that the contents in the stomach come up into the esophagus it is important to keep the baby’s head elevated. You want to hold the baby upright for about 30 minutes after each feeding to make sure that his stomach has settled completely before lying down.

Acid reflux disease runs in my family. I was unaware of this until, as a nineteen-year-old, I was diagnosed with it myself. I had been experiencing a great deal of stomach pain for a period of many weeks. I had attributed it to stress as I had been going through a particularly rough time at my job. One night at dinner, I had eaten only a couple of bites of my dinner when I doubled over in pain. It felt as though my stomach was on fire and was burning a hole through the middle of me. I had never felt such pain and I have not since.

Acid reflux disease makes gastric acids and stomach contents to be regurgitated back into the esophagus

The next day I went to a walk-in clinic and was told that I had an ulcer. I was prescribed Nexium and told that it would clear up with time. At that time, Nexium was a relatively new drug and was extremely expensive. After only a few months on the prescription, I could no longer afford it and was forced to stop taking it. Although the pain I experienced that night at dinner was much worse than the everyday pain that I went through afterwards, I think it goes without saying that the pain never went away completely. People who suffer from acid reflux disease know that it never really goes away. It is merely a matter of how badly it is from one day to the next. I did a lot of experimentation when it came to my diet trying to quell the acid reflux although at that time I was unaware that I was experiencing acid reflux.

To the best of my knowledge, I had an ulcer. If it was not an ulcer, then it was just heartburn. No matter what I tried I couldn’t get rid of the pain. I tried giving up coffee, which proved to be a difficult endeavor. I had heard that coffee, like orange juice, was very acidic and could be aggravating my ulcer so I tried low acid coffee. I was told that my habit of smoking was aggravating my ulcer and I worked on that as well. It was not until almost five years later that a new doctor told me about acid reflux disease. After relaying to my mother what the doctor had told me, I quickly found out that I was not the only one in my family who may have acid reflux.

After working with a new doctor and learning everything I could about acid reflux disease, I have been able, with medication, to manage the disease and the pain associated with it. I noticed after a month or so after I began to get a handle on my acid reflux that my nasal allergies had lessened in severity and I was having fewer health problems in general. As with most health issues, many of my problems were connected and treating my acid reflux disease helped my health in areas that appeared to be unrelated.

Natural stomach acid is in your stomach for a reason. The actual acid is not the cause of acid reflux disease. It is not like it is a nasty poison that someone put in there without approval. The acid breaks down foods and sorts them out into the right department so to speak. Proper digestion depends on the presence of adequate stomach acid while you are eating.

When you eat, food moves from the mouth through the esophagus and into the stomach to be digested. At the end of the esophagus there is a band of muscles that open and allow foods to go into the stomach. It then closes to prevent the food and acid from coming back up into the esophagus. Many people experience acid reflux when foods or digestive juices escape the stomach and come back up through the esophagus.

Contrary to a common thought, GERD is not a disease, and it is not caused by a bad sphincter or too much stomach acid

To make sure your stomach has enough acid at mealtimes, make sure you chew your food thoroughly. Getting saliva mixed into the food as you chew will get the digestion process off to a good start.

Snacking throughout the day causes the stomach to pump out acid gradually instead of saving it for mealtimes when it is needed the most. It is best to not eating closer than three hours apart. For example – if you eat breakfast at six a.m. and lunch at twelve p.m. then a snack at nine a.m. would be fine.

Next, make sure you do not drink too much liquid while eating a meal. Too much liquid dilutes the necessary acid in the stomach. The best policy is to drink a glass of water 30 minutes to one hour before or after your meal, with only a few ounces consumed during the meal. After you’ve eaten one hour or two feel free to guzzle down all the pure natural water you want.

Another cause of acid reflux comes from eating large meals. This increases pressure on the stomach causing the stomach contents to be forced out and up into the esophagus. You will need to give your body at least two hours to digest your food properly. And never ever lie down immediately after eating a large meal.

To avoid overproduction of acid eat smaller portions of food at each meal. It would also help a lot to eliminate any fried food or food that contains refined sugar, or caffeine.

Obesity can also increase abdominal pressure, and your risk of suffering from acid reflux as well. If you are overweight, cutting back on the amounts of food that you eat at each meal, and exercising daily should put you on the right path to helping you shed a few pounds.

Acid reflux is caused in some people when the sphincter muscle at the end of the esophagus becomes weak or does not close correctly. Prescription drugs, certain foods, alcohol, and smoking have been known to weaken the sphincter muscles.

Try not to use antacids since they cut down the acids you will need when you eat. Without enough acid, your stomach is unable to do its job of breaking down the food into the various nutrient components.

Inadequate digestion of proteins can cause the liver to increase production of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol which is the bad cholesterol that does the most damage to your body.

Instead of taking antacids try the following natural approach. If you still have sour stomach in between meals try eating something that will settle it without triggering more acid production such as sauerkraut. Your stomach should relax after eating sauerkraut in five to ten minutes.

The benefits of natural solutions are they normally cost a lot less, but even more important is the fact that natural solutions are a healthier alternative. They tend to reduce the possibility of becoming dependant on addictive chemical drugs.

There are also three herbs that are well known for soothing stomach muscles which are chamomile, gentian, and ginger. If your problem does not respond successfully to natural remedies within a few days, please see your health care provider.

Does your morning coffee cause you pain? Are you frustrated when a night out dining with friends ends in discomfort instead of relaxed conversation? Do you carry antacids with you every day? Heartburn is more than just a nuisance. It can detract from enjoying a meal, force you to change your routine and hang over your every decision – what to eat, what to drink, when to lay down. What is this monkey on your back and how can you find relief?

There are foods to be avoided if you suffer from acid reflux such as orange juice, ice cream or alcohol

WHAT CAUSES HEARTBURN?

Heartburn occurs when the acid content of the stomach makes its way back into the esophagus. A burning sensation and even a bitter taste are experienced by heartburn sufferers. If you are suffering more than twice a week you may have acid reflux disease – also known as GERD. Why is this important? Not all heartburn is caused by GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). Occasional heartburn can be caused by a variety of factors but if you have regular episodes there are things you can do to help.

WHAT CAN I DO?

If you have regular heartburn the first thing you should do is stay away from regular use of antacids. Antacids can relieve the pain of occasional heartburn, but because they are designed to neutralize the acids in your stomach they can cause the stomach to create MORE acid – a cycle called ‘acid rebound’. Some medications can also cause diarrhea or constipation or even increase the risk of food poisoning by inhibiting the growth of good bacteria. Watch out for trigger foods such as caffeine, alcohol, citrus, chocolate, minty, spicy or tomato-based foods as well as fatty or fried foods, onions or garlic. Being overweight or smoking also increases the risk of GERD and lifestyle changes may help to control the symptoms. Activities such as lying down after a meal, bending forward, lifting heavy items or eating large meals can bring acid reflux on. Avoiding these activities after a meal, eating smaller portions and raising the head of your bed several inches may help. Some natural products such as orange peel extract are being researched for their abilities to curb heartburn.

WHO IS AT RISK?

Anyone. But it should be noted that pregnant women, children, overweight individuals and smokers are all likely candidates. Young babies have immature digestive systems. National Digestive Diseases (NDDIC) says that most children outgrow GERD by the time they are one year old. However, because the symptoms are painful precautions like frequent burping and keeping the infant upright for 30 minutes after eating can reduce the occurrence. Older children may have to take similar precautions in diet and activity as adults. You should always consult your doctor when you suspect GERD to avoid future complications.

Being overweight or pregnant increases the pressure in the abdomen. 25% of pregnant women experience heartburn at some time during their pregnancy. If you suspect GERD it is important to contact your doctor as there can be harmful side effects of persistent heartburn including scaring of the esophagus, asthma, erosion of the teeth and even increased risk of esophageal cancer. Frequent, persistent heartburn can also be a symptom of other serious conditions and should be checked on by a professional.

There are many different ways for treating acid reflux naturally, but medical advice should take place first.

Acid Reflux is the other generally used name of Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, also more often referred as GERD. The disease causes damage to the esophagus as the acidic contents from the stomach, containing acids and pepsin, pushes back to the esophagus since the sphincter becomes weak and can no-more prevent the contents from stomach from gushing back in esophagus. The acidic contents burn the esophagus and causes irritation in the esophagus. This is a chronic disease, which has life long repercussions. The treatment in this case can only help temporarily, i.e., as well as one continues with the medication.

One of the most effective natural treatment for acid reflux is in the form of a tea drink

To diagnose Acid Reflux, one can go through gastroscopy, since the symptoms of this disease re so mild that diagnosing them is very difficult and people rather than going to the doctor stick to own medication. The very commonly used resort to escape the pains and the problems from GERD is going for an antacid. These are actually helpful in case of short-term and infrequent attacks of the disease. But these can’t provide much relief for a long time.

People can change their diets to actually eliminate or reduce the effects of Acid Reflux. A proper routine can be made to reduce the problem which generally causes due to the irregular habits of eating or eating more junk food and also from excessive drinking. Patients also in this case maintain diaries for keeping a track of what they eating and drinking to keep a check on the recurrence of the attacks of Acid Reflux. And when these controlled diets also don’t help in controlling the disease then the doctors resorts to drugs to keep the disease in a controlled position.

The most popular and largely used drug for this disease is PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors), this is the drug which is generally prescribed by the doctors for relief from the pains causing due to the attacks of Acid Reflux. The drug helps in stopping the production of the acidic contents in the stomach which pushes into esophagus and cause acid reflux. Not many side effects do these drugs have, but are really relieving at times of attacks.

The other drug primarily prescribed by the doctors all over the world is 2 Blocker, which also restores relief to the esophagus. Both these drugs have been proved to be successful drug therapy for long term acid reflux sufferers. But patients with more severe damages, who don’t respond to these drugs, are prescribed more radical drugs, with strong effects, known as Promotility agents. These drugs have sometimes adverse side effects, so these are very seldom prescribed by the doctors.
